Period Architrave
Elaborate period architrave designs are our speciality. We manufacture a large range to match their skirting board counterparts. This category features replicas of architraves commonly used during specific architectural time periods like the Victorian, Georgian and Edwardian eras, as well as styles which are inspired by the character of these bygone periods. A defining interior feature of period properties is their use of ornate mouldings.
Period architraves could be quite wide compared to those of today's buildings, and sometimes be made up of two pieces; a wide 'base' piece and a small detailed piece mounted on top. This provided additional detailing creating a more elaborate framing for a doorway.
Period architrave were often thicker than the adjoining skirting board, which helped disguise the join line. Plinth blocks were also widely used to achieve the same end, with rosettes often adorning the top corners of the doorway. While enhancing the grand effect, rosettes also removed the need to mitre the top corners of the architrave. These days however, it is more popular for the skirting and architrave to be the same thickness, providing a flat, 'flush' join.
