Environmental Policy
Sustainability of our planet is fast becoming a major priority for every business and citizen throughout the world in the face of climate change, pollution and the increasing number of disasters associated with these changes. At Skirtings R Us we recognise our responsibility toward the environment, beyond the legal and regulatory requirements, and are committed to implementing measures to reduce our carbon footprint as a part of our business strategy and operating methods.
Policy Aims
We endeavour to:
- Comply with all relevant regulatory requirements
- Continually improve and monitor environmental performance
- Continually improve and reduce environmental impact
- Increase employee awareness
Packaging
Skirtings R Us recognises packaging and packaging waste is a major problem facing the global economy impacting ecosystems and wildlife around the world. It is without doubt a global priority to reduce packaging, and its associated waste where possible. However, packaging is still required by businesses to ensure the safety of their product during transit. Therefore, business' approach to reducing packaging needs to be strategic and structured. This incorporates two main areas; how/why we use packaging and what packaging material we use.
Packaging Use
Packaging is used to reduce the chance of damage to products. Globally, the most common reason for a damaged product is through delivery, and this statistic is higher if delivered through a parcel network which pass parcels numerous times through depots. For a large number of orders Skirtings R Us is able to bypass using these networks, and instead deliver door to door using private vehicles. This removes the damage related hotspots that courier networks present, and means orders despatched on private vehicles require little to no packaging. By altering our delivery structure our packaging burden has reduced by up to 80%, lowering both packaging costs and our carbon footprint.
Packaging Materials
We do however recognise this solution is not always going to be possible, and that on occasion parcels will need to be wrapped. For these instances we now source spiral wrapping materials produced from recycled plastics, thus helping find a use for global plastic wastes and again reducing the companies carbon footprint.
Energy
Skirtings R Us is committed to conserving energy throughout its business activities. We will seek to further reduce our energy consumption, placing particular emphasis on the energy intensive manufacturing area of our activities, and are committed to using renewable energy sources when and where possible. Our state of the art facility is already partially self-sufficient utilizing renewable energy sources and would be waste products to provide energy and heating.
Transportation
We aim to reduce our CO2 emissions which particularly accrue from transportation of goods in and out of our facility. Outbound emissions reductions will be and are achieved through operating a stringent routing structure for outbound goods, utilizing the full capacity of transports and opportunities to deliver nearby or on route, while reducing route length. Inbound emissions reductions will be achieved though utilizing local and domestic material suppliers where possible, reducing the emissions that inbound goods will contribute to the environment before arriving to us.
Waste
Skirtings R Us are committed to reducing waste production. This has been achieved and improves with recycling structures and operating methods in place throughout our facility and growing relationships with third party recycling specialists. Where possible waste materials will be recycled, reused, or used for energy, and where this is not possible, waste is disposed of responsibly.
Monitoring
We will:
- Comply with all regulatory requirements
- Continually improve and monitor environmental performance
- Continually improve and reduce environmental impacts
It is the responibility of company directing staff, management and supervisors to ensure Skirtings R Us continues to consider and the environmental impact of all business activities on a day to day basis and to implement measures to reduce this impact in their work. All employees and subcontractors are expected to assist in the implementation of this policy, ensuring their work is carried out, where practical to do so, without risk to themselves, others or the environment and will co-operate with directing staff on environmental matters.
