Our Period skirting board is evocative of Victorian entrance halls and Georgian drawing rooms with doors surrounded by intricately detailed, wide architrave.
Rooms were darker then, so the shadow cast by the flickering light would create a wonderful relief on the detail of such decorative framework.
It works especially well with wall panelling, creating a fantastic border effect.

Available Sizes

Our large skirting is available in 18mm or 25mm thickness, lengths of either 3050mm or 4200mm and heights of between 146mm or 296mm, depending on length.

All sizes made to order and with an un-primed or primed finish

Material

High Density Moisture Resistant (MR) MDF

Our Period skirting board is made of a high density, moisture resistant (MR) MDF.

MDF is free from natural defects. This gives it a long product life and means that MDF will not; warp, twist, bow, split, or contain knots, all of which you would find in pine and any other natural wood. This makes MDF the most economical, time saving material for your skirting board requirements.

Skirtings R Us MDF builds on these properties. We manufacture a High Density MDF board which we have specifically sourced, as it produces a far smoother cut surface when moulded, superior to other standard or premium MDF's.

For more information on our MDF please see our MDF information page.

Finish

Finishes for Period MDF Skirting Board

When you select your Period MDF skirting board you can have a choice of finishes applied as below;

Un-primed – Product will be supplied as raw MDF skirting board, with no MDF primer applied. The product will need priming before any paint finish is applied.

Please note: the product may need two or more coats of primer to fully seal it.

Primed – Product will be sprayed with MDF primer to visible faces and sanded between coats. The board will need a final paint finish. Any paint can be used to top coat this product including oil, water or solvent based paint.

For more information, see the additional information tab (above) or our finishes guide to find out which finish is best for you.

The Benefits of Primed Finishes

Primed finishes are the most popular supplied to the DIY, building and design industries for several reasons:

  • Pre-primed mouldings relieves a lot of work as MDF, being an absorbent material, can require two or more priming coats to seal it properly.
  • If primed, mistakes and marks commonly made during installation can be rectified when finishing (unlike a gloss or satin finish, which is almost impossible to ‘touch up’ well and would be wasted).
  • Therefore primed skirting boards/architrave is the easiest and most flexible product to install with less risk of permanently damaging the finish.

We recommend a primed finish on skirting board and would urge anyone who is thinking otherwise to reconsider.

For more information on primed finishes and the limitations of other finishes visit our finishes page.

Customer Questions
What are the most popular skirting board designs?
Traditional designs like Ogee, Torus, Chamfer and Bullnose are the most popular skirting board designs found in the UK, with Ovolo, Lambs Tongue and Square also featuring regularly.
What size skirting board should I buy?
The skirting board you use should be proportionate to the size of your room. Bigger rooms can take taller skirting boards and smaller rooms should be fitted with shorter skirting board heights so they stay proportionate within a room. Relating to the above point, the era of a building can also influence which skirting board size you should buy. Period properties are generally able to take larger skiritng board sizes as they were constructed with larger room sizes and ceiling heights. In contrast todays average ceiling height is 2.4m which is more proportionate with a middling skirting board size between the 121mm/5" and 171mm/7" sizes. Differing again, buildings constructed from 1950's to 1970's often featured very small skirting between the sizes to rebuild Britain after WW2 as cheaply as possible. These would have been 69mm/3" to 96mm/4" skirting heights, however it could be questionable whether you want to imitate the trands of these decades!
What is the time frame for delivery on my delivery date?
Our deliveries run all day on the appointed day of delivery from our base in the Midlands, although they are generally completed between 7am and 7.30pm. Please ensure your representative is on site on the appointed day if delivery until the goods have been delivered, but the driver will call 30 mins prior to arrival to help facilitate this. This point is especially relevant to trade building sites which may need to remain open/leave a man on site for longer than they usually would to receive delivery. We would always reach out if there was an issue preventing delivery after it had been arranged, and would never not show.
